How A / P Works

We created this little booklet to explain how our design process works. When the booklet is unfolded there is a poster on the opposite side that you can use to decorate your space. There are four posters in the series, each with a different combination of materials and colors. The metallic stamping adds another dimension and bleeds through at times on the front. See below for the full text.

“If I had one hour to save the world, I would spend fifty-five minutes defining the problem and five minutes finding the solution.”
- Albert Einstein

Define the Problem
The first step is defining the problem you want to solve. This lays a solid foundation for the design work. Well-defined problems unlock creativity and result in elegant solutions. To do this we listen, analyze and research first. We listen to your goals, needs and aspirations for the project. We learn about the constraints of the site, zoning, schedule and budget to define the unique problem or question that the design solution will address.

Choose the Tools

Once the problem is defined we can choose the tools we will need to solve it. Tools consist of relevant information, team members, consultants and builders, project management methods, design and construction strategies. The tools we use will depend on the problem we are solving. If we are designing a new house on a tight schedule we will need different tools than if we are renovating an historic home.

Design
Design is only one part of the process of planning a building, but it is the fun part. This is when creativity is unleashed. We approach the design of each project with a mix of the rational and intuitive to find solutions that are beautiful, elegant and practical. We look at the big picture and create total solutions that have been studied from inside and out. This phase can be smooth, efficient and rewarding if we have done our work up front to define the problem and collect the tools.

Documentation and Coordination

Once the design is complete we will develop the working drawings and specifications. The drawings describe the scope, details, configuration and relationship between the materials, systems and other elements of the project needed for construction. The specifications establish quality standards and quality assurance protocols for the project and work in conjunction with the working drawings to define the project.

Construction and Quality Control
Our work does not end with completing the design and documentation. The translation of the project from drawing to reality needs to be thoughtfully guided by the architect. The pressures of construction can compromise design integrity and the quality of the built work. Our presence throughout construction leverages your investment in the architectural design to ensure the best possible outcome of the completed work.

Wrap Up
Buildings are complicated to build and take a long time to finish. It is important to acknowledge the completion of the work and celebrate a job well done. Every project deserves a grand opening and we will plan your grand opening party for you in your new space. We will also create a project book that includes relevant documents, including renderings, drawings, specifications, manuals and product warranties. This serves as an artifact for your reference and proof of the quality of the work.
