Atlantic Beach Villa

In the early part of the twentieth century Atlantic Beach was a popular beach resort for wealthy New Yorkers and many private homes were built within the few blocks that span the barrier island. This project is a renovation of a 1920's beach house in Atlantic Beach that looks like a simplified Bauhaus / International Style villa. The property is enclosed by a low wall to create a refuge within the relatively dense neighborhood. The front door is set back in a wood wall and a masonry screen wall shields the expanded living space and its glass enclosure. The connection of the living area to the pool and yard is enhanced by the glass doors and overhanging roof. Windows are unified into a few simple gestures and the black stucco of the back volume helps to break down the mass.
